selected photos from my smartphone, australia, december
i showed levin these photos earlier this year just as pretense / context to my writing about australia. i was surprised to hear he was really into them and said they were great etc etc cause they're all just photos from my phone and super spontaneous and unconsidered. sometimes i think its sad i don't fuck with photography like i used to when i was a kid because i was so good at it and i have all these memories now and i wonder why i dont just pick up a camera n get going again or why i even gave it up in the first place and i'd always concluded it just became tiring carrying around a wholeass analogue camera everywhere i'd go when i so rarely deemed there any occasion to take a photo. now i think i actually somehow translated that compulsion into something digital. i think in the end i held myself to too high of an aesthetic standard using film to the degree that i ceased to record anything cus nothing was event enough, whereas i have this abundance of digital content because it's so much easier and so much less intimidating taking a snapshot on your phone camera in the moment. like, if it sucks ass then its whatever, and if it doesn't then that rocks. the outcome is i end up actually being a tonne more fluid with the practice of capturing images and coming out with this mundane shit that has a really endearing quality to it. i'm unsure whether levins reaction is merely a result of probably not being exposed to an online culture of immediacy to the degree that people my age are when it comes to capturing and distributing smart phone photos much like my own on social media, that render my own content a very tiny needle in a very large haystack, but its nice to hear someone say you have an eye for stuff. i haven't heard it in a while. and i guess i never would've given any of these images a second thought. cool
