Post-colonial Gothic prioritises the voice of the sexual ‘other’ (Angela Carter- subverts folklore positioning women as passive victims of volence )
defying cultural paradigms: reactions to political upheavals of the moment- particularly true in origins of horror film genre in 1930s through slasher trends of the 20th cent.
Cinema provides key cultural context:
1950s american horror: generally depicts threats external to the nation, reflecting Cold War anxieties
Horror + the invasion of a normative space:
Upper- middle class white community by monstrous others that emanate from outside this safe space: zombies, vampires, ghosts, etc- the return of the repressed into the homely space of the conventional family
E.g a nightmare on elm street:
The return of child-killer Freddie Krueger to ordinary, suburban white-picket-fence community, manifesting through nightmares though eventually transgressing the boundry between real and fantasy.
The film posits these events as the consequence of the catastrophic failure of adults (especially fathers) to protect their children: effectively the authority of the father as head of the conventional nucelar family collapses reflecting the deep cultural anxietiies of late 20th century america as to the integrity of the traditional family+ the position of the father witihin it.
targeting (young) women
At the end of the film the wife is dragged from her doorstep back into the home by an unseen force, waving to her children: the father remaining powerless to prevent the haunting of his wife and children.
Deep male hostility towards women and their sexuality
The monk: young + virginal Antonia is raped and murdered
The exorcist: pubescent Regan is posessed by a demon and raped with a crucifix.
Horror + sexual transgression:
Slasher genre- violence frequently visited upon sexually active teenagers engaged in some sort of transgressive activity, an attempt to define themselves against adult authority - marked by anxieties concerning absence of proper paternal authortiy
E.g night of the living dead, halloween 1978
Violence suffered by young = punishment for their rebellion against conventional patriachal codes of sexual behaviour that retain considerable ideological power in contemporary patriachal codes of sexual behaviour
